As someone who writes not only for print but also online media I often find myself presented with opportunities to sample new products. When I was recently asked to sample some teas from the Village Tea Company I sat up and took notice, as a devoted tea drinker I’m always on the hunt for that one special tea that I can’t live without. Upon reviewing the company website you could have knocked me over with a feather after discovering that Village Tea Company founder and CEO was an African-American gentleman by the name of Martin Ekechukwu. This is why I was so excited to receive an email asking if I would like to sample Village Tea Company’s line. Village Tea is a new player in the tea market and provides loose leaf teas in earth-friendly recyclable packaging – you can even use the containers as pencils holders on your desk, or paintbrush bins like we do.

I was given the great opportunity to sample some teas from Village Tea Company. I’d like to tell you a bit about Village Tea Company by sharing some of the letter from the CEO I found on their website.
The Village Tea Company brand is a young brand, less than 3 years old, but prides itself on providing exceptionally tasting teas packaged with the environment and consumers in mind. Our packaging is completely environmentally friendly but it’s what’s inside the package that consumers truly love….the tea of course!
The Village Tea team spends months every year traveling to tea farms and meeting with farmers that have become friends over the years to hand pick each tea that you enjoy. We stay on site at each farm and commit ourselves to understanding the culture and demands put on our friends on a daily basis. It’s this commitment and effort that drives us to advance the message of loose leaf tea and it’s benefits.
I must say, I was super impressed with the packaging of the teas I received. I loved that the containers were a heavy paper board. But they are also very sturdy, seal tightly and keep light away from the tea!
When I opened my first container, I found that the loose leaf tea was packaged in 2 separate muslin bags to help keep it fresh. I even received tea sacks tucked in beside my tea. What a nice treat to receive these with loose leaf tea! One package was filled with pyramid tea bags and the tea that filled the tea bag is a very nice sized/ high quality leaf.
Ginger root dominates over the delicate green tea in this blend, so if you’re not a fan of the spicy stuff, skip this one. If you are, though, this is a nice example of warming ginger brightened with lemongrass. It’s definitely herbal from the lemongrass and lemon myrtle, and it’s a bit grassy-tasting, but not bitter. It will likely calm your stomach after a big meal.
We liked this tea over ice, too, though we were tempted to add a dollop of honey. The ginger flavor would also be excellent mixed half-and-half with lemonade.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but what about tea?
Martin Ekechukwu would likely say yes to both. The founder, CEO, and Creative Director of Village Tea Company Distribution, Inc. and the Village Tea Company brand, 33-year-old Martin was born in Nigeria to a Nigerian father and Czech mother. The youngest of four children, he spent most of his childhood taking trips between Nigeria and the Czech Republic in order to visit his extended Czech family and attend summer school in the Czech Republic. During these Central European forays, Martin developed a taste for tea as he shared many cups with his grandmother. Then, in the late 1980s, in pursuit of better opportunities, Martin’s father moved the family to Fayetteville, Arkansas. Eventually, Martin attended both the University of Arkansas and then the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Martin then worked for the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, where he became fascinated with the research on tea and its health benefits. Vowing never to forget his roots in “the village” – the tight-knit community he was raised in – Martin found it apt to name his new endeavor Village Tea, which he launched in 2009.
A Spot of Tea
I don’t consider myself a tea drinker but I’ve always wanted to be one. I just feel like there’s something so healthy and clean about drinking tea. I’ve tried to replace my daily coffee addiction with tea but I’ve failed every time. I just like the smell and taste of coffee. My mornings really are like a Folgers commercial: I smell that coffee brewing and it wakes me right up (except on most days when I’m the one making the coffee..hence I’m already up..boo). I feel like we’re constantly hearing news on tea: how it’s full of antioxidants, aids in weight loss, clears your skin, saves the world, etc. Every now and then we hear things on coffee, but it’s usually referring to black coffe which is not how I drink it. I prefer mine to be as close to a milkshake as possible. Load me up on cream and sugar and I’m good to go.
